Driving the Green Hydrogen Revolution: Alexey Serov's Inventive Pursuit

 In the realm of green hydrogen fuel innovation, Alexey Serov, a researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, stands out with an impressive portfolio of 84 patents and at least 35 more under review. Serov's relentless pace of inventions centers around fuel cells, particularly those powering electric vehicles or buildings through the electrochemical conversion of hydrogen and oxygen into heat, water, and electricity. Unlike traditional combustion, fuel cells offer a cleaner energy solution.


Serov's groundbreaking work addresses the entire life cycle of "green" hydrogen, produced through a process called electrolysis, where water molecules split into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen then recombines with oxygen in a fuel cell to generate electricity. The crucial aspect of Serov's research lies in enhancing every step of this process, from generating to utilizing green hydrogen.

A significant challenge in fuel cell technology involves the use of expensive metals, particularly platinum group metals, as electrocatalysts. Serov is focused on decreasing reliance on these rare and costly materials, exploring alternatives that balance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. By improving electrocatalysts and materials, he aims to boost fuel cell performance and longevity while making strides in transitioning fuel cell technology to mass production.

One notable initiative led by Serov is his role as the deputy director of the DOE Roll-2-Roll (R2R), a collaboration spanning multiple laboratories. This initiative aims to scale up the production of electrocatalyst materials and expedite electrode production processes, showcasing Serov's commitment not only to research but also to transitioning innovations into practical applications.

Serov's journey in research and innovation has been marked by diverse experiences, from developing innovative fuel cells in South Korea to studying short-lived, highly radioactive isotopes in Switzerland. His passion for chemistry, sparked during childhood through access to chemistry books, has propelled him through various roles and countries, leading him to his current position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

In addition to improving fuel cell technology, Serov is addressing critical challenges such as the scarcity of materials like iridium, a key component in electrocatalysts. By developing efficient recycling methods, he aims to extend the supply of iridium and reduce dependence on mining.

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Serov has broadened his focus beyond utilizing hydrogen fuel to encompass its production and applications in various sectors, contributing to the rapid decarbonization of industries.
