NASA's Roadmap for Robotic Exploration of Icy Moons

This innovative approach aims to unlock the mysteries of celestial bodies such as Saturn's moon Enceladus and Jupiter's moon Europa, both believed to possess subsurface oceans.

NASA's Cryobot Development:

Scientists envision adapting the terrestrial thermal drilling technique commonly used for investigating Earth's glaciers and ice caps to the harsh conditions of extraterrestrial environments. The icy shells on moons like Europa and Enceladus present unique challenges due to their extreme cold and thickness. NASA's Scientific Exploration Subsurface Access Mechanism for Europa (SESAME) and Concepts for Ocean Worlds Life Detection Technology (COLDTech) programs are at the forefront of these development.

The workshop, hosted at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), focused on refining the cryobot mission architecture. Scientists and researchers collaborated to address four key aspects crucial to the development of these robotic explorers: communication, mobility, thermal capability, and power.
